Mark McClellan is joining Cigna's nine-member board of directors.

Doctor and economist Mark McClellan is joining Bloomfield health insurer Cigna's nine-member board of directors later this year, the company announced.

McCellan, director of the medical center for health policy at Duke University since 2015, will begin on Cigna's board effective Dec. 1. If the insurer's $52 billion purchase of pharmacy-benefit manager Express Scripts closes prior to December, McClellan will join the combined company's board upon closing.

Cigna officials say McClellan is known for his bipartisan engagement and his work in health care addressing a variety of strategies and policy reforms to provide better outcomes and lower costs.

Before his tenure at Duke, McClellan served as the director of the Health Care Innovation and Value Initiative at the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at The Brookings Institution. He was a senior fellow there since 2006.

He also served as administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and also worked in the White House as a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.
