Connecticut Children's Medical Center on Thursday announced plans to acquire a Shelton-based concussion clinic that serves patients up to 22 years old.

The Hartford medical center said it will purchase HeadZone, which serves hundreds of patients annually between the ages of 5 to 22 suffering head injuries. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Dr. Karen Laugel, medical director of HeadZone, said Connecticut Children's is the "ideal organization" to assist the clinic's care for sports-related concussions and will help them grow throughout Fairfield County.

The planned acquisition will boost Connecticut Children's sports medicine portfolio and expand its footprint in the southwest corridor of the state, said Jim Shmerling, the Medical Center's CEO and president.
