Ten years of saluting our Business Champions

2012 Business Champions Digital Edition

We're celebrating a milestone — ten years of Business Champions.

The companies contained in this special section are the true lifeblood of our communities, producing the jobs, creating the products and delivering the critical services we all count on each day. They are not only business-savvy, but are innovators as well, generating industry buzz that resonates throughout our communities and beyond.

We take tremendous pride in again joining with the MetroHartford Alliance to celebrate the many successes of our region's privately-held companies.

Congratulations to each of our seven winners and every other company who took the challenge of competing in this year's Business Champions.

In this section, you'll meet some of the best and brightest, as determined by our independent panel of judges. Nominees were judged on the basis of information they submitted covering four criteria: workforce excellence, innovation, sustainability and year over year revenue growth.

The overall winner is Pegasus Manufacturing, a Middletown contract manufacturer and machine job shop that specializes in tube bending, metal forming and fabrication for a variety of industries — including the next generation space shuttle and submarines.

eVariant in Simsbury, featuring its cloud-based HealthConnect platform helping hospitals and large health care systems gather and analyze enormous amounts of data, wins in the 'revenue' category.

West Hartford's Filomeno & Company, a business advisory and accounting services firm, is the winner in the 'workforce' category.

JCJ Architecture in Hartford, an integrated planning, architectural and interior services company, topped the 'sustainability' category.

Tops in the 'innovation' category is Meriden's Protein Sciences, a corporation on the cusp of dramatically changing the way vaccines are being made.

And we had a tie this year in the 'best start-up' category between Farmington's Karelia Health, with a mission to save money and lives by preventing and reversing the progression of chronic illness, and Hartford's Patient Advocate for You, assisting clients at all levels of care in the healthcare system to make informed choices.

As always, we hope you'll find these stories inspirational, educational and motivational. We look forward to celebrating your company's successes in these pages next year.
