The National Labor Relations Board is seeking to force the company that cleans the Hartford Courant to hire back eight workers and bargain with them as union members again.
Pressroom Cleaners Inc., a non-union contractor brought on by the Courant last month to clean the newspaper's office, end up laying off eight long-time union workers with the 32BJ SEIU.
The NLRB complaint calls out the company for failing to bargain with the workers and threatening the remaining workers that they would be fired if they tried to unionize.
In addition to reinstatement, the NLRB seeks to increase the pay of the current workforce to the salary level paid by the former employer, Capitol Cleaning.
