New London's city council is scheduled Monday to revisit a contract agreement with its firefighters that is designed to save 25 jobs, The Associated Press reports.
The council failed last month to approve the deal, which was reached after mayor Mayor Daryl Finizio announced plans to make drastic cuts in the public safety department.
The layoffs are scheduled to take place Tuesday unless the council acts on Monday night.
The city's entire budget remains up the air. The Day of New London reports the council also is expected to act Monday on a petition that gained enough signatures to force the council to either repeal the $42.3 million budget, or set a date for a public referendum on the plan.
