NRG planning biomass announcement

CORRECTION: This article originally incorrectly said DEEP Commissioner Dan Esty would attend the NRG announcement.

New Jersey energy generator NRG Energy – operator of nine Connecticut power plants – will make a special announcement Thursday at its proposed biomass plant in Montville.

NRG plans to convert its natural gas and diesel plant in Montville to produce 40 megawatts on biomass from Connecticut forests.

The company has had difficulty finding a purchaser for the power from the plant, and NRG even went as far as trying to force the purchase onto Connecticut Light & Power as part of the merger between Northeast Utilities and NStar.

NRG said local officials would discuss their meetings with Dan Esty, the commissioner of the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, on the next steps in getting the project under construction. However, DEEP officials said Thursday morning that Esty would not be in attendance at the announcement.
