UConn to hire a master planner and architect

University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst says the school needs to create a strategic architectural master plan, The Associated Press reports.

Herbst has sent an email to the university community to inform them of her plans to hire a master planner and architect to take charge of the project.

Herbst says she doesn't just want attractive buildings, but cohesive campuses that link aesthetics with ideas such as environmental sustainability and historical preservation.

University spokesman Mike Kirk says no price tag has been put on the new position, and there is no timetable for the project.

Herbst already has set up a campus appearance committee, which has been responsible for changes such as eliminating modular classroom buildings in Storrs and improving landscaping in pedestrian areas.
