Cigna named top IT innovator

InformationWeek has named Bloomfield insurer Cigna's new online health care cost and quality tools as the top ten technology innovations of 2012.

The announcement was made as part of the 24th annual InformationWeek 500 rankings, which are based on a examination of the technology strategies and initiatives of companies across the 21 industries worldwide.

The award recognizes myCigna.com for its newly redesigned "Find Doctors and Services" search engine that enables Cigna customers to assess medical costs for 200 common medical procedures.

Pricing includes specialist, facility and related fees, according to the real-time status of the individual's health plan deductibles and co-insurance, as well as their available health spending account funds – all before choosing their physician.

Rather than using broad cost ranges or averages, Cigna's price estimates are based on actual claims payments.
