CL&P unions reject contract offer

The nearly 1,000 members of IBEW Local 420 and Local 457 have overwhelmingly voted to reject a contract proposal from Connecticut Light & Power – with more than 95 percent voting no.

The two-day vote tallied Friday evening does not authorize a strike by the locals. which represent linemen and other workers. Rather a joint statement from IBEW Local 420 Business Manager Frank Cirillo and IBEW Local 457 Business Manager John Fernandes calls on CL&P "to return to the bargaining table and reach a reasonable agreement that addresses these dangerous and inadequate staffing levels that have contributed to some of the worst storm response in Connecticut history."

The statement reads: "It is unconscionable that as company executives rake in record salaries and bonuses, CL&P continues to cut staff, implement dangerous amounts of forced overtime, and replace skilled local workers with costly, inexperienced out-of-state contractors."

The previous contract expired May 31.
