YWCA Hartford region is again ramping up free income-tax services for the area's needy households and is soliciting volunteer tax preparers. Connecticut is already accepting 2012 income-tax filings.
The service will run from Jan. 29 to April 13. In 2012, YWCA said it served 197 filers.
Tax preparers will be available at 135 Broad St. in Hartford on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Call 211 (Infoline), or YWCA at (860) 525-1163 Ext. 450 to schedule an appointment or to receive further information about the program.
Volunteer opportunities include tax preparers and greeters. Training will be provided, and no experience is necessary. Those interested in volunteering should contact Shari Cousin at (860) 525-1163 ext. 258 or ShariC@ywcahartford.org.
Meantime, the state of Connecticut began accepting Tuesday residents' filing of 2012 state income tax returns. The deadline for Connecticut residents to file their state and federal returns is April 15, the state tax collector and IRS said. (Massachusetts residents have until April 16 to file federal returns due to Patriot's Day, the IRS says.)
Department of Revenue Services spokeswoman Sarah Kaufman said, however, refunds may be slightly delayed due to the state's new anti-fraud screening efforts.
