United Technologies Corp. has unveiled a new program aimed at making its business operations, suppliers and products more environmentally sustainable.

The "Natural Leader" program, announced today, targets a 25 percent reduction in water use and 15 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from current levels over the next five years. It also extends sustainability incentives to UTC's supply chain. The company is targeting an 80 percent reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, in line with United Nations goals.

In a statement, UTC said in the last 20 years, it has cut its water usage by more than half, and its emissions by more than a third in absolute terms – even as the company's sales tripled.

This is the first time UTC is extending sustainability goals to its supply chain, it said. The company said it will be incentivizing suppliers to integrate sustainability practices in their operations.
