West Haven chamber to add license renewal services

Connecticut drivers looking to renew their licenses will soon be able to skip the lines at the state Department of Motor Vehicles by going to a soon-to-be-opened customer service center in West Haven City Hall.

The state DMV and West Haven officials announced plans for the new service center to be run by the West Haven Chamber of Commerce starting early next year.

The center will issue license and ID renewals two days a week, with the potential for more days to be added later, officials said. An official opening date has yet to be announced.

The center aims to fill the void left when eight AAA offices in New Haven and Fairfield counties stopped providing license renewal services earlier this year, and will help ease congestion in the DMV's regional offices, officials said.

Staffing will be independent of the DMV, similar to the model used at AAA Club Alliance offices in Hartford, Middlesex and New London counties.

"We look forward to providing a necessary service to West Haven and its surrounding towns," said West Haven Chamber of Commerce executive director Alan Olenick. "Attracting thousands of people to our city and its downtown area is part of our mission to help support West Haven business."
