Bloomfield's LiquidPiston Inc., which makes rotary combustion engines, says it received a $2.5 million contract from the Pentagon to continue production of its 30kW X4 rotary diesel engine.

The Bloomfield company will receive the second round of funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which has committed $6 million to the engine technology.

Under the project's second phase, LiquidPiston will build 30-pound lightweight engines that increase efficiencies by 30 percent.

Development will continue at LiquidPiston's test facility in Bloomfield, the companies said.

"Exceeding DARPA's objectives for the first phase of the program validates the potential for an entirely new category of military-grade, rotary diesel engines," said Alexander Shkolnik, CEO and founder of LiquidPiston. "This is the first time that a rotary engine has shown the capability to achieve true compression ignition at this ratio in a single stage of compression and without any supercharging."
