Cox acquires Calif.-based cloud services provider

Cox Business, the commercial unit of Manchester cable company Cox Communications, announced Thursday it acquired a cloud services provider to enhance its managed services portfolio.

Cox, which generates over $2 billion in annual revenue, said its purchase of California-based RapidScale will allow it to provide businesses a broader range of cloud offerings to improve productivity and reduce IT overhead. RapidScale's cloud services include desktop, mail, server and backup and recovery services.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In recent years, Cox Business has grown its portfolio beyond telecom offerings with acquisitions and investments in software firm Blueprint RF, a wireless network provider; Unite Private Networks, a high-bandwidth and fiber-based communications provider; managed services provider Trapollo; and patient entertainment system Hospitality Network. It also recently expanded Cox Business Security Solutions nationwide.
