THE NONPROFIT PROFILE

Everybody Wins CT Inc.

Mission: Everybody Wins! CT provides hands-on literacy programs that engage students, encourage leadership and learning, inspire a love of reading and build stronger communities.

Background: Everybody Wins! CT is an affiliate of Everybody Wins! USA, a national organization founded in 1991 in New York City by Arthur Tannenbaum to address illiteracy issues among inner-city elementary school children. Everybody Wins has evolved from informal read-aloud sessions to four distinct literacy and mentoring programs: Power Lunch, Readers Are Leaders, Story Time and EW! Book Club. In 2004, Everybody Wins! CT became an independent affiliate of Everybody Wins! USA. We serve schools in Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, New Britain and New Haven and Windsor. Everybody Wins CT! is a member of Connecticut Association of Nonprofits

Our Programs: Power Lunch is a lunchtime literacy and mentoring program. Each week, groups of adult volunteers travel on their lunch breaks to a nearby elementary school for one hour of one-on-one reading with a low-income student. Volunteers commit to Power Lunch and their student for one year, and often follow the student throughout their elementary years. The Readers As Leaders matches older students with younger students for weekly, one-hour read-aloud sessions to promote increased reading skills, community service and leadership.

Major Fundraiser: This November, our signature event — "Night of the Chefs" — pits chefs from local culinary schools against award-winning master guest chefs from local restaurants. "Through the Looking Glass" is a photography contest, reception and gallery showing to be held at The Bushnell October through November. Volunteer Needs: We need reading volunteers for the Power Lunch program. The willingness to read with and provide a positive role model to a child is all that is required. Volunteers can also organize book drives for new or gently used children's books. Contact Allison at (860)232-3549 or aholst-grubbe@everybodywinsct.org.
