The American Institute of Architects on Thursday recognized New Haven's Gray Organschi Architects for the original and eco-friendly design of the Fairfield Jesuit Community Center at the Fairfield University campus.
Builder PAC Group of Harwinton and landscape architect Reed Hilderbrand of Massachusetts were also recognized for the center that opened in 2009. The three companies cumulatively won the 2010 Builders' Choice Award.
Strategically placed windows enhance the relationship between the inside and outside environments that the building is designed so people feel like they are sitting in a treehouse.
"It rescues damaged European beech from the site to fabricate altar furniture in such a way as to preserve the grain of wood and at the same time to celebrate the meditative simplicity of the whole," the judges wrote of the building.
