Hartford Business Journal - Lifetime Achievement Awards 2011

2011 Lifetime Achievement Digtial Edition

A field so strong, we had to pick four

Last year, when we our Lifetime Achievement program made its debut, we honored three leaders who have contributed greatly to making Greater Hartford a better place to live.

There was Joe Marfuggi, the man who made recapturing the riverfront his mission.

There was Nancy Bernstein, the force behind Women's Health Connecticut.

And there was Simon Konover, the leader of a vast real estate empire.

It was a strong class that blended gravitas, age and accomplishment — a good set of metrics for assessing lifetime achievement.

In selecting the 2011 class, our judges — 2010 winner Marfuggi and influencer-around-town Gene Sheehan — had such a tough time winnowing the field of excellent candidates that we decided to bend the rules a bit and go with four winners this cycle.

And even that was a tough decision. There were a host of well-qualified civic leaders left out.

It's tough being that good and finding you didn't make the cut.

The good news is there's always next year. Think how good the Red Sox felt when they finally won that World Series. Keep pitching.

So, what about the four who were chosen?

In the following pages, columnist Lawrence Cohen will apply his writing skills to giving our readers a fresh glimpse at some of the best known people in Central Connecticut. Photographer Pablo Robles captured the images.

The success of each of our honorees has been built on hard work and their ability to surround themselves with great employees. They've applied their energies and their intellect to building success and in giving back to their community.

Most of them started on a different career path before finding their calling.

And Central Connecticut is a better place today for their efforts.

We hope you enjoy reading about them. And we hope you'll join us Nov. 17 when we honor them at a breakfast celebration at the Hartford Club. For information, visit our website at www.hartfordbusiness.com/event/lifetime. For tickets, contact Amy Orsini at aorsini@HartfordBusiness.com or 860-236-9998, ext. 34.

And of course we want to thank the sponsors who made this venture possible: presenting sponsor Kostin, Ruffkess & Co. LLC and event sponsors the Pita Group and WDRC radio 1340.

It's never too early to start thinking about who you'll nominate for our 2012 Lifetime Achievement Awards. Keep making it tough on our judges. We all like a challenge.
