Navy launching USNS Medgar Evers on Sat.

Groton's Electric Boat parent General Dynamics and the Navy will christen Saturday in San Diego, Calif., a new supply ship to honor slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

Myrlie Evers-Williams, Evers' widow and former chairman of the NAACP, will join Navy Secretary Ray Mabus other dignitaries at General Dynamics' NASSCO shipyard to launch the USNS Medgar Evers.

Medgar Evers was an African American civil rights pioneer and World War II veteran. He rose to national prominence through his work to fight segregation and extend voting rights to all Americans. Medgar Evers was assassinated on June 12, 1963.

The 689-foot-long USNS Medgar Evers will deliver more than 10,000 tons of food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions to Navy combat ships at sea.
