Sovereign Bank, with branches throughout Connecticut and New England, is pitching a sweepstakes in which the winner will get $50,000 to invest in their enterprise.

Second place winners will get $25,000, and third place walks away $10,000 richer.

The promotion, says Jack Murphy, Sovereign's head of small- and medium-sized enterprise banking, aims to build the bank's relationships with that commercial-banking sector.

For-profit commercial customers who open one of a half dozen checking, savings, credit/debit card, payroll services or merchant-banking accounts, between Oct. 22 and New Year's Eve qualify for the cash prizes, the bank says.

Sovereign is the U.S. arm of Spain's banking giant Banco Santander.
