The national Green Parking Council, based in Hartford, honored 25 parking garages throughout the United States on Wednesday for their commitment to sustainability, including three in Connecticut.
The Green Parking Council honored garages in Hartford, New Haven and New London for their commitment to environmentally-responsible technologies and practices. These three, along with the other 22 nationally, are part of the council's efforts to make sustainability a bigger part of parking facilities.
The Connecticut Convention Center Garage in Hartford was honored for having free motorcycle and scooter parking, energy-efficient lighting, and an automated payment system.
The Chapel Square Garage in New Haven was honored for its tire-inflation station, its electric-vehicle charging station, and energy-efficient lighting.
The Water Street Parking Garage in New London was honored for its variable message signs promoting efficient traffic flow, landscape requiring no irrigation, and 40 small vehicle spaces.
"All of these sites demonstrate how parking is part of the solution to creating a more sustainable environment," said Constance Keedle, administrative director of the Green Parking Council, in the awards announcement. "Each site has its own unique story and shows the opportunity ahead for all of us."
