Bloomfield environmental chemistry firm VeruTEK Technologies, Inc. on Tuesday completed the first ever green chemistry cleanup of a New York City location.
VeruTEK used its patented chemical oxidation technology to clean a site on the East River in Queens, N.Y., which will be redeveloped for a new branch of the Queens Public Library and a New York State Parks ranger station.
The site was contaminated with 50,000 pounds of coal tar contamination in the soil. Rather than dig up the ground to remove the coal tar, VeruTEK injected its technology into the soil, destroying the contaminants.
VeruTEK has performed this type of brownfield remediation across the globe, but this is the first time the technology has been used in New York City.
