U.S. OKs Covidien's breathing monitor

Medical-device maker Covidien PLC, with operations in North Haven, is preparing a limited national rollout of a tool and software that it says enables clinicians to better detect early warning signs of respiratory distress in patients.

Covidien said the U.S. Food & Drug Administration cleared it to market its Nellcor adult respiratory-rate sensor and related software in America. Covidien began European marketing of the device late last year, authorities said Tuesday.

The Nellcor system monitors patients' ventilation, or the passing of air in and out of the body. The software analyzes the inhalations and exhalations for changes that could alert doctors and nurses to problems, Covidien said.
