Otis to install elevators at Brazil stadium

Farmington manufacturer Otis Elevator Co. will install 21 energy-efficient elevators and escalators at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, site of the 2014 soccer World Cup championship match and the 2016 Summer Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies.

Otis -- a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp. -- won other contracts to supply equipment at two other World Cup stadiums in Brazil.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Maracana Stadium elevators and escalators will feature Otis' energy-saving ReGen drives, which can reduce energy consumption by up to 75 percent. The units will have monitoring equipment to optimize building management.

Brazil plays a crucial role in Otis' operations and growth in South American. The company will open a 200,000 square-foot production facility in Sao Paulo this year.
