Hartford area's March home sales jump 24 percent

Hartford area home sales jumped 24 percent in March, a further sign that unseasonably warm temperatures and pent-up demand may be shaking the local housing market from its doldrums, Realtors say.

Sales of single-family dwellings rose to 626 units in March from 504 units sold the same month in 2011, according to the Greater Hartford Association of Realtors.

Pending sales -- houses whose buyers have not yet closed the deal -- also rose 29 percent to 992 units from 768 a year ago.

March median sales prices fell 6.6 percent to $203,000 from $217,250 last year.

Condo sales remained weak, falling 1.5 percent last month from a year ago. Prices also dropped 15 percent to a median $135,000 in March from $158,500 the month last year.
