New Britain's new school chief starts work

Kelt Cooper, New Britain's new superintendent of schools, will meet the public this week, The Associated Press reports.

Cooper, who will be paid $200,000 will be introduced to the community at a news conference on Monday evening. He begins work on July 1.

The 51-year-old Cooper, who is bilingual, comes to Connecticut from the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District in Del Rio, Texas.

School officials have said they chose Cooper because he has worked in an urban setting with a large Hispanic population.

He takes over from Ron Jakubowski, who has been acting superintendent of schools since last June, when Doris Kurtz resigned after 10 years on the job.
