CT lawmakers to collect donations for vets

Connecticut lawmakers will be collecting donations of clothing, personal care items and cash for veterans at the state Capitol, The Associated Press reports.

Sen. Carlo Leone of Stamford and Rep. Jack Hennessy of Bridgeport will host the "Help-a-Hero" donation drive outside the main entrance of the Hartford Capitol Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Democratic lawmakers are co-chairmen of the Veterans Affairs Committee.

The donations will go to help Connecticut veterans and the South Park Inn Veteran Drop-In Center in Hartford. Leone said soldiers returning from overseas need a "helping hand" as they come home to a high unemployment rate.

The organizers say items needed include tooth brushes, shampoo, t-shirts, socks and umbrellas.

Tax deduction receipts will be provided to those who donate items.
