The Hartford's new investment, human resources chiefs

Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. promoted Brion Johnson to chief investment officer, and Martha Gervasi to executive vice president of human resources.

Johnson also was named president of the Hartford Investment Management Co. (HIMCO) unit.

Both report to Chairman, President and CEO Liam E. McGee.

Johnson succeeds Hugh Whelan, who had been HIMCO's acting head. Whelan will retire as planned after a brief transition period, The Hartford said.

Gervasi succeeds Eileen Whelley, who is leaving to join an unidentified global insurer.

Johnson previously was HIMCO's chief financial officer and head of strategy and development. Before The Hartford, Johnson was executive vice president and head of portfolio management for PPM America Inc., a unit of Prudential PLC.

A chartered financial analyst, Johnson earned a BA in economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Gervasi joined The Hartford as senior vice president of human resources in the consumer markets business and finance and enterprise risk management functions.

Prior to joining The Hartford, Gervasi was chief human resources officer for a division of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation and worked in human resoures at General Electric Co.

Gervasi earned her BA in American studies from St. Joseph College in West Hartford, and her MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
