New London budget cuts to include fire, police

New London's mayor has announced budget cuts to the city's fire and police departments, The Associated Press reports.

The Day of New London reports Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio plans to issue layoff notices to 25 fire department employees and 10 in the police department by June 1.

In addition, 11 vacancies in the police department and five in the fire department won't be filled.

The mayor says the cuts should save the city about $1.2 million and are needed to meet the new $83 million city budget.

The city has about 80 fire department employees and about 90 members of the police force.

City Council President Michael Passero calls the plan grandstanding and politics. The council is expected to vote Monday on its proposed budget, which also includes an 8.3 percent tax hike.
