Connecticut River to become first National Blueway

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will designate the Connecticut River Watershed as the first National Blueway at a ceremony Thursday at Riverside Park on 20 Liebert Road in Hartford.

The National Blueways Initiative creates water trails throughout the country. The blueways are part of President Barack Obama's Great Outdoors Rivers Initiative to establish community-driven conservation and recreation.

The Connecticut River designationis part of an effort by the Friends of the Silvio O. Conte Refuge and the Connecticut Watershed Council to conserve and restore the river for wildlife, people and outdoor recreation.
