CT's Preston lands $800K more for RiverWalk cleanup

Preston will use $800,000 in federal funds toward removal of hazardous soils and building materials at the former Norwich Hospital site that is slated for commercial redevelopment, authorities say.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a pair of competitive grants to the town to remediate brownfield sites on the 390-acre property on Route 12, Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Joe Courtney said.

Last December, the state awarded Preston a $4 million loan and a $500,000 grant for demolition and remediation of the site the clear way for the RiverWalk mixed-used project, the agency said.

The former hospital facility operated for 90 years until it was closed in 1996.
