Lawrence Union has joined Optimus Management Group LLC, a temporary staffing company in Hartford, as director of business development. Union had been president and CEO of Northeast Biodiesel Co. LLC, a startup biofuel manufacturer in Greenfield, Mass. He was also has been vice president and energy practice director for GRT Corp, an IT staffing company based in Stamford, and president and general manager of the Connecticut Energy Cooperative Inc. Optimus, a certified minority-owned enterprise, has offices in East Hartford and Norwalk as well as in Orlando.

Judith Kalfon has been named general manager of The Heritage Hotel in Southbury. During her more than 20 years as a hotelier, she has worked in Radisson, Omni Hotels, Hilton, and Sheraton sites. She was most recently the general manager of the Radisson Hotel in Seattle. The 163-guestroom Heritage Hotel is a member of Sterling Hotels and WNW Hospitality.

Worx Branding & Advertising in Prospect has added three marketing professionals. Melanie Petro joins as senior copywriter, the same title she held at the Digitas marketing agency. Nicole Richards joins Worx as an account manager, after working in Detroit at New Media Strategies, a social media agency, and JWT, the largest advertising agency in the world. And Katie Bushey joins as a marketing strategist. Bushey had been director of public relations at Hoffman Auto Group, a Worx client. The brand communications agency is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Worx maintains the distinction of having won more American Graphic Design Awards since 2005 than any other agency in the country — 64 total awards in 12 different categories.

Peter K. Rydel has joined the law firm of Reid and Riege P.C. as a stockholder in the firm's Litigation Practice Area where he represents clients in employment, commercial, fiduciary and probate litigation. He served as a judicial clerk in the Third Department of the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court. He will be in the firm's Hartford office. Reid and Riege also has an office in New Haven.

Colleen McGuire has been named the new director of the Graduate Business Learning Center at the Hartford campus of the University of Connecticut's School of Business. She has held vice president positions at Wachovia Bank and Mellon Financial Corp. and is a UConn School of Business adjunct professor. McGuire will direct UConn's Graduate Business Learning Center in downtown Hartford and its part-time and executive MBA programs.

Anllo has worked as a communications specialist in the office of government and external affairs at Wheelock College, in Boston. Lucie Howell has been named director of Quinnipiac University's Bristol-Myers Squibb Center for Science Teaching and Learning. Howell moves from the University of Michigan where she was the academic program officer for the Center for Engineering Diversity & Outreach, a College of Engineering project to improve K-12 science education. At Quinnipiac, the center consists of a network of scientists and educators working to advance the art of science education from kindergarten to university level, with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

Scott A. Bissell, an orthopedic surgeon, has joined the medical staff of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed his general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Bissell also completed a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, Los Angeles, Calif. He is practicing as a member of Connecticut Orthopedic Associates.

George Bacigalupo becomes senior vice president and chief credit officer; Shelley Guyette becomes first vice president, human resources; Gary Urkevich becomes vice president of corporate initiatives; and Joseph Marullo becomes vice president of commercial lending in the Pioneer Valley. Berkshire Bank recently acquired Connecticut Bank & Trust Co.
