CT jobless rate 8% despite 1K May jobs gains

Connecticut's unemployment rate is stuck at 8 despite job gains in May.

Connecticut's roster of the employed added 1,000 jobs in May, but not enough to budge the state's jobless rate from its 8 percent perch, state labor authorities say.

The state's nonfarm employment grew again last month, following April's 6,400-jobs gain, the state Department of Labor said Thursday.

The agency tagged this the best five-month start to a year of employment gains since the job recovery began at the start of 2010.

The unemployment rate has held steady at 8 percent for four consecutive months. Connecticut's unemployment rate is down from 8.4 percent in May 2012.

"With the exception of a storm impacted February, Connecticut has been experiencing consistent job growth so far this year," said the labor agency's Office of Research Director Andy Condon. "The upward turn in labor force participation, after 35 straight months of decline, may indicate increased confidence in labor market conditions. However, there are still headwinds ahead ..."
