What do you do?

The first sentence of this write-up is dedicated to my family, friends, and colleagues who have supported my pursuit of the opportunities for which I am being recognized. I moved to Hartford in 2011 to work for Pratt & Whitney and didn't know a soul. I came here by way of Philadelphia … by way of Cleveland … by way of Buffalo. I attended John Carroll University (Sociology, Biochemistry) in Cleveland and Drexel University (MBA) in Philly. With work experience in chemistry, philanthropy, and consulting I was entering a new world, both professionally and geographically.

What seemed like just weeks into my role in the supply chain organization at Pratt & Whitney, I was introduced to the United Way of Central & Northeastern Connecticut. I became a founding member of Emerging Leaders Society, a new United Way affinity group, and was quickly elected to chair the organization. Over the past two years our group has experienced rapid growth and is currently led by a 20-member steering committee to which I defer all of the credit for our success. These individuals are selfless in their quest to create positive community change in addition to the great things they are doing in their own careers. Today I continue to serve as chair of the group and sit on the United Way Board of Directors.

Please describe your career path.

At Pratt & Whitney I support our company's effort to meet quality, cost, and delivery targets for military and commercial finished parts and raw material procured from our supply base. Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Company, is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aerospace turbine engines. My science and business background has provided a great foundation for my development and learning in the high-tech manufacturing industry. I have been involved in several business and community initiatives at UTC including our Supplier Diversity Council, Sustainability Council, and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

What's been your biggest challenge professionally?

My biggest professional challenge has been transitioning my career from philanthropy to the corporate world. In Philadelphia I worked for the William Penn Foundation as part of the environment & communities grant-making team. I have transferred more lessons learned and experiences from that role to my current position than I ever thought possible. I have supplemented my desire to stay involved in positive social change through my volunteerism and support of United Way Community Investment.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?

Ten years from now I hope to be inspiring others to find a balance in work, life, and community while promoting a culture of fun and continuous improvement at my workplace. I hope I can be as good of a mentor to someone as my mentors have been to me. I hope to feel like I have made a difference when I look back and feel motivated to do more when I look ahead.

What is the best advice you received?

The best advice I ever received was to "never settle" for anything less than your best.
