At the Hartford Business Journal we are experts at capturing the formal business portrait, the smiling posed suit-and-tie images. We've done them for over 20 years and we think we've done them well. But with this year's 40 Under Forty publication we wanted to try something different, something more timely. We wanted to present the winners as not just what they are, but who they are.
"Selfies." They are the photos people take of themselves. Arm extended, smiling back at their phone, these selfies populate social media, employees' desktops, and email inboxes. Today's businessperson is both subject and photographer. There's something about these candid shots that captures an energy we just wouldn't get in a typical formal portrait. They show us as we are, and as we'd like to be.
Using their selfies, we asked this year's 40 Under Forty winners to define themselves. In these pages, you will see some truly unique images: from candid family, workplace, and pet shots, to winners who are skydiving, traveling, and even getting a tattoo.
Each year our three judges select the best and brightest young professionals to represent the 40 Under Forty class. Our winners presented themselves in unique and personal ways and we are eager to share them with our readers.
So here they are —your 2013 class of 40 Under Forty winners — as they want us to know them. Please join me in congratulating these accomplished men and women. And we hope you will join us at this year's 40 under Forty celebration Monday Sept. 23 at the Connecticut Convention Center.
