Mystic Aquarium receives National Medal from White House

The White House on Thursday awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Service to Mystic Aquarium, officials announced.

The medal, presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Mystic President and CEO Stephen M. Coan, is the highest award conferred on museums and libraries for community service. The aquarium was recognized for its educational programming for underserved communities and its program for youths with intellectual disabilities.

Mystic is the first aquarium to receive the award since 2009.
