Malloy signs hospital fee disclosure law

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has signed a law that will require hospital-affiliated physicians to better disclose facilities fees they charge patients.

Attorney General George Jepsen lobbied for the measure, which requires doctors to provide patients with a written notice of the fee, the amount likely to be charged, and other information.

Jepsen's office received nearly 80 complaints from patients who were surprised to receive a bill for a hospital facility fee after a visit to their doctor's office, even when that office was miles away from the affiliated hospital.

Jepsen said the fees range from hundreds of dollars to more than $1,000.

The Connecticut Hospital Association said in February that its members agreed that more transparency was needed.
