Five companies split up $54K from CTNext

CTNext, the state-backed entrepreneurial network, said it has awarded $54,000 to five companies, including two in the Greater Hartford area.

Winners of the Entrepreneur Innovation Awards include Envirowerks of East Hartford, Fresh Farm Aquaponics of South Glastonbury, 109 Design and Why Science of New Haven, and Vesselon of Darien.

Envirowerks is developing a hydrogen-on-demand system for diesel trucks, while Fresh Farm is raising fish and plants together in a sustainable ecosystem.

109 Design is developing a medical device and app for scoliosis, Why Science is developing a cloud-based learning system, and Vesselon is developing a device to treat stroke victims.

Each award was $10,000. 109 Design and Fresh Farm each took home an extra $2,000 for being voted judges' and crowd favorite, respectively, at CTNext's July 17 awards ceremony.

Nearly 60 startups applied for grants, CTNext said.
