Plaudits for Green Bank’s commercial solar leases

A nonprofit coalition of public clean-energy agencies has recognized the Connecticut Green Bank for its CT Solar Lease Commercial program.

The Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) awarded the Green Bank its 2016 State Leadership in Clean Energy Award for the program. Five other state agencies from around the country also won awards.

Every two years, CESA holds the awards to highlight what its panel of judges view as model programs and projects that quicken the adoption of clean-energy technologies.

Under Green Bank's commercial solar lease program, third-parties finance solar and other clean-energy installations in exchange for tax credits and other revenue. There is little to no cost to the commercial property owner, according to the Green Bank.

The program also includes the C-PACE program, which pays for solar installations through a lien on the property.

CESA's executive director Warren Leon said the program "shows impressive creativity in tackling the barriers to solar development" and helps make solar possible for those who wouldn't otherwise have an appealing financing mechanism.
