4 CT farms net solar grants

Four Connecticut farms will divvy up $331,170 in federal USDA grants to help purchase solar arrays and efficiency upgrades for lighting and heating, members of Connecticut's congressional delegation announced this week.

Recipients include:

  • Prides Corner Farm, Lebanon, $187,184 for a 240-kilowatt roof-mounted solar array expected to produce 296,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year;
  • Gilberties Herb Garden, Easton, $75,825 for LED lighting and a heating system upgrade expected to save nearly 172,000 kilowatt hours annually;
  • Howling Flats Farm, New Canaan, $28,652 to purchase a 26-kilowatt solar array, which will provide 100 percent of the farm's energy needs; and
  • Meadow Ridge Farm, Litchfield, $39,509 to purchase a solar array that will offset all of its energy needs.
