The Mohegan tribe has secured $80 million in financing to proceed with plans for an expanded convention center, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority said this week.

The MTGA, which owns and operates the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, first announced the proposed expo adjacent to the casino in March and says it will open by the summer of 2018.

"Mohegan Sun currently turns away tens of thousands of meeting room requests every year," said said Mario C. Kontomerkos, MTGA CFO. "This new amenity will provide us with much needed exposition and meeting space to capture these requests."

The total size of the expansion, including the 131,000-square-foot Expo Center, will be 240,000 gross square feet. The proposed center would be located in a vacant area next to the casino's Winter Garage and link to the garage and the Earth casino and tower.
