Back9 successor acquires ball tracing app

Hartford-based Swing by Swing Golf Inc., a golf mobile app, media and entertainment company, has acquired gottaGolf LLC, a top ball tracer and social app.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2013, the gottaGolf app, which has a user base of 250,000 golfers, provides automatic ball tracing, unique photo and video editing tools, and social features. Golfers use the app to create and share golf photos and videos as well as connect with other golfers.

The gottaGolf team will join Swing by Swing but remain in its offices in Atlanta, Ga.

GSA, a golf social influencer and marketing agency launched by both companies in January, will consolidate under Swing by Swing. The firm represents some of golf's biggest social influencers, including Elise Lobb, Josh Kelley, and Ryan Rustand.

In May, Swing By Swing partnered with golf instructor Gary Gilchrist to launch a personalized golf instruction and training app, Swing-U.

Founded in 2010, Swing by Swing Golf Inc. originated as the Back9Network, which hoped to launch a golf lifestyle TV network. Back9 filed for bankruptcy in 2015 after a series of missteps and financial issues, and re-emerged in 2016 as Swing by Swing Golf Inc., which is an app the company purchased in 2014.
