Bloomfield health insurer Cigna said it has acquired Santa Monica, Calif., health tech firm Brighter Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

The insurance giant says Brighter's digital health plan platform will allow it to accelerate and expand its consumer initiatives and provider partnerships. Brighter works with health service and dental organizations to engage patients and providers in using personalized digital tools.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Cigna noted Brighter will continue to operate in the health tech marketplace as well as become the insurer's "digital engine."

Cigna had already been working with Brighter, but the acquisition will accelerate development of Cigna's mobile and desktop platforms, create features for consumers and incentivize providers to increase quality of care and maximize cost-savings, Cigna President David M. Cordani said.
