Wallingford's Z-Medica launches latest bleeding-control product

Wallingford-based medical device company Z-Medica LLC said it has begun commercially marketing a recently approved wound dressing that controls bleeding during surgery and after traumatic injuries.

The company planned to launch its QuikClot Control+ today at the 2018 EAST Annual Scientific Assembly of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The product earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval last June.

Z-Medica, which develops hemorrhage-control products for health care providers, the military and first responders, said the dressing, which contains a clotting agent, is designed to control internal organ space bleeding for patients with moderate or severe hemorrhaging.

It can also be used for severely bleeding surgical wounds and traumatic injuries, the company said.

"Full commercial availability of QuikClot Control+ adds an additional life-saving tool to the arsenal of Z-Medica products that surgeons can use to help save lives and fill the unmet need of hospitals across the country," Z-Medica CEO Stephen J. Fanning said in a statement. "Uncontrolled bleeding continues to be a major cause of preventable deaths. Devices like QuikClot Control+ can improve hemorrhage control, potentially saving lives and reducing health care costs."

The product is being manufactured in Wallingford along with the original QuikClot product line, the company said.
