Trinity, independent hospitals join Aetna ACO

Aetna's Hartford headquarters.

Hartford-based health insurer Aetna has formed a narrow-accountable care plan with Trinity Health of New England and six independent hospitals.

Aetna Whole Health includes the Trinity system's 900 doctors across 200 practices and four hospitals -- flagship St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, St. Mary's Hospital, Johnson Memorial Hospital and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, as well as member hospitals of the Value Care Alliance and its 1,800 affiliates doctors.

VCA hospitals include Danbury Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, New Milford Hospital, Griffin Hospital, St. Vincent's Medical Center and Middlesex Hospital. The deal also includes ProHealth Physicians, which has 350 doctors in 90 locations.

Accountable care organizations (ACOs) vary in design, but generally offer incentives to providers to keep patient populations healthier. They are seen as an alternative approach to "fee-for-service" health care.

Trinity said Friday that it hopes to have 10,000 covered lives in the ACO in the first year. VCA said it expected to have 1,100 patients in the arrangement.

St. Francis first signed an ACO deal with Aetna in 2014. Later that year, Michigan-based Trinity Health announced it would acquire St. Francis. The Johnson and St. Mary's deals came the following year.

That original ACO contract is a broad network agreement and still exists, Trinity said. The new arrangement with Aetna is a tiered, or narrow network.

VCA has had an ACO relationship with Aetna since 2016.
