Connecticut is awarding $6 million towns and land trusts, including four in New Haven and Middlesex counties, to preserve open space.

Connecticut has awarded nearly $570,000 to help four communities in New Haven and Middlesex counties preserve roughly 112 acres as open space, state officials said Monday.

The funding was part of $6.05 million in state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) grants awarded to 23 Connecticut communities, land trusts and water companies under the Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition program. The grants will help those communities buy a combined 2,005 acres of open land statewide, officials said.

"Connecticut's tradition of preserving open space has helped define our landscape and preserve its important natural resources and geographical beauty," Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement.

New Haven and Middlesex county grants include:

  • East Haddam − $17,550 to East Haddam Land Trust Inc. to buy the 19.52-acre Sakolsky property for part of a 100-acre greenway connecting resources within Moodus Village.
  • Madison − $184,800 to the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority to buy 44 acres at 347 County Road to eliminate fragmentation of Hammonasset River watershed lands and protect drinking water.
  • North Haven − $200,250 to the town to buy 29.55 acres at 182 Kings Highway, a former orchard that includes wetlands and a vernal pond.
  • Essex − $166,950 to Essex Land Trust Inc. to buy 18.54 acres at 10 Ox Bow Lane to link three connected parcels for a 50-acre greenway.

The program, which began in 1998, has provided more than $125 million in state funding for the purchase of more than 33,000 acres of land in 137 cities and towns, officials said.

The state has designated more than 500,000 acres of land as open space and set a goal of protecting 673,210 acres by 2023.
