Hartford parking magnate Alan Lazowski has been elected to the board of directors of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP.

Lazowski, who founded LAZ Parking in 1981, runs the second largest parking and transportation company in the nation. Laz Parking operates 2,750 parking locations in 30 states nationwide, employs more than 11,500 people and manages revenue over $1.4 billion.

A son of Holocaust survivors, Lazowski said in a news release that he is "honored and humbled" to be recognized by the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the country.

LAZ, he says, has been dedicated to recruiting a diverse workforce since its inception, hiring immigrants and offering second chances to employees.

"I look forward to working with the NAACP in furthering their mission, especially as it relates to criminal justice," said Lazowski, who is the second Connecticut resident on the national board.

Scot X. Esdaile, the president of the Connecticut Chapter of the NAACP, commended Lazowski for promoting diversity and equality at LAZ, and said he was "proud" to nominate a "great supporter" of the national civil rights organization.

A UConn graduate, Lazowski currently serves as chairman of the board of the National Parking Association and the Chabad House of Greater Hartford. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2014 as a member of the United State Holocaust Memorial Council.

Lazowski also serves on numerous boards, including the Hartford Economic and Development Corp., or HEDCO, the CT Immigrant and Refugee Coalition, or CIRC, the Anti-Defamation League, and founded Voices of Hope, an organization sharing the experiences of Holocausts survivors.
