MGM Resorts International in Springfield on Monday announced the opening of more than 1,000 new jobs to help manage the $960 million casino and entertainment complex.

MGM Springfield, the entertainment company's first in New England, will employ 3,000 employees when the luxury resort opens in September, which accounts for one of the largest hiring efforts in the city's history.

The new casino is expected to take significant business away from Connecticut's Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino when it opens. MGM is also likely to poach away talent from Connecticut casinos as it ramps up its hiring.

The expanded list of more than 1,000 jobs posted on the resort's website now provides job descriptions. Most of the new opportunities are in concession sales in food and beverage, and diverse positions, including locksmiths, electronics technicians, carpenters and painters.

Other positions are available in human resources, retail management and conference services.

Since MGM Resorts announced its desire to develop in Springfield in 2012, the entertainment company has partnered with over 25 local organizations to offer personnel training and education opportunities to prepare the workforce.

MGM said employees will undergo background checks, although recent regulation updates allow the resort to hire a larger pool of applicants. Certain employees are required under Massachusetts Gaming Law to be registered or licensed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission before beginning work.

MGM Springfield's Career Center will assist new employees with the licensing process.

The company will invest approximately $100 million in annual payroll and offer a benefits package, including average salaries of more than $40,000. Most jobs will be full-time positions with benefits, officials said.

MGM Springfield plans to hire 35 percent of its workforce from the city and 90 percent from a combination of the city and the region.

Its corporate office is in a 11-story building at 95 State St., commonly known as the MassMutual building.
