DCP: $2.3M awarded to car owners in '17 under Lemon Law

The state Department of Consumer Protection said it helped car owners reap more than $2.3 million in automotive warranties in 2017, which represents almost $800,000 more than the amount returned to consumers a year earlier.

Using the so-called Lemon Law, which establishes an owner's automotive warranty rights, DCP in 2017 processed 64 cases, resulting in $2.3 million being returned to consumers. By comparison, the state agency processed 55 or fewer cases between 2013 and 2016, returning $1.5 million or less to consumers.

Dozens of consumers are awarded new cars or refunds each year through the arbitration program that helps resolve disputes between consumers and automobile manufacturers.

DCP Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull said the agency has worked tirelessly over recent years to inform and protect consumers who may have purchased a defective new car.
