The Department of Motor Vehicles Express Center inside the Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union's newly-launched Milford branch is officially open for business.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy joined other state and Nutmeg officials for a grand opening Wednesday. The branch, at 977 Boston Post Road, opened to the public on Thursday.

In a statement, Malloy said the center gives customers a reliable option for renewing driver's licenses while reducing long lines at other DMV locations.

"This public-private partnership should serve as a model for how we can work together to make sure Connecticut residents receive the best possible services," Malloy said.

Nutmeg President and CEO John Holt said the credit union plans to offer "convenience through technology, whether you are doing your banking or renewing your license."

Under the new system, motorists will check in at a kiosk and be given an average wait time. They can either wait or sign up for a half-hour window when they can return later in the day. Eventually, customers will be able to book online appointments, the credit union said.

In addition to license and ID card renewals, drivers can also apply for duplicate licenses and name changes at the Nutmeg location. Non-members will be charged a $5 convenience fee.

Hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.
