Texas-based fast-casual burger chain Mooyah is making inroads in the Nutmeg state with the opening of its third Connecticut franchise just steps from the University of New Haven campus.

The eatery, which features made-to-order burgers, hand-cut fries and ice cream shakes, will open by the end of June at 1 Atwood Place in West Haven, the chain said Monday.

Franchisee Prakash Wadhwani, a local entrepreneur who previously ran three Kennedy's All-American Barber Club locations in the area, said the burger restaurant is his first foray into the food industry.

"I did my due diligence by researching other restaurant brands, and I believe Mooyah offers a superior product," he said. "Located next to a college campus, I think we are the perfect place to provide students with fresh food made with quality ingredients at an affordable price."

Mooyah serves Certified Angus Beef brand burgers, Jennie-O turkey and Morningstar Farms black bean veggie burgers that can be customized with a choice of five kinds of cheese; nine veggie toppings; 11 sauces; and a variety of buns, including a hand-crafted lettuce bun.

The restaurant joins two other Mooyah franchises in Connecticut; one in Newington and the other near UConn's campus in Mansfield. A Mooyah location in West Hartford closed last year.

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Plano, Texas, the company said it is eyeing Connecticut for further expansion.

Total investment for a franchise ranges from $397,750 to $559,400, including a $35,000 franchise fee, the company said.
